As California’s population and economy continue to grow, traffic keeps getting worse…. EDIT widening hundreds of miles of freeways and expanding airports costs us hundreds of billions of dollars, takes decades, displaces communities, pollutes our air, and deepens California’s dependency on oil.
It is clear that we need a fast, healthy, affordable way to get around that can move millions of people. This is why the state is building a high-speed rail.
The longest section of the project between Bakersfield and Merced is almost complete; 119 miles of the corridor are at the step where track can be laid, and wires can be hung. The last hurdles for completing the full San Francisco to Los Angeles line is a series of tunnels, 40 flat miles through relatively empty farmland, and upgrades to the Metrolink rail.
While there is still work to be done to complete the largest infrastructure project underway in America, be believe it can be done sooner, better, and at less cost with three reforms
Require PG&E and other utilities to quickly collaborate with the California High-Speed Rail Authority.
Require California’s other state agencies to pay for their parts of the project.
Lift the cap on high-speed rail work outside of the Merced to Bakersfield corridor so the California High-Speed Rail Authority can start working with private investors on the next key segments.
